Washing the Bonfim Church

Jan 17th

Suggested by amk358 on Nov 2nd

Washing the steps of the Bonfim Church occurs on the second Thursday after January 6th (Kings Day) at the Church of the Bonfim on Montserrat hill, in the Itapagipe peninsula, in the lower town of Salvador de Bahia (Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim), Brasil. Thousands of people line up along the church to clean it (Lavagem do Bonfim). Afterwards there is an 8km procession through the streets, then of course a parade with music and dancing. The festival lasts for ten days and chants can be heard in Yoruba (West Africa language).
