Park Benches

Think

  • Where is this?
  • Who sits here?
  • Has anyone sat here for a while?
  • Is it a warm or cold day?
  • How does the picture make you feel?
  • Is there anything under the leaves?

Solve

There are 23 benches in this park and each one can hold three people. Each bench measure 146cm. How long would they be combined? Can you convert this measurement to metres? How much room is allowed per person? Round this to two decimal places.

Discover

Fact: There are around 27 000 public parks in the UK, with around 2.6 billion users per year.

Question: Conduct a short survey of who in your class or school uses public parks. What do they use them for?

Question: Create a poster to advertise your local park. Why is it important that they are looked after and used?

Respond

Write about the day in the life of a park bench. Who visits you? How long for? What conversations do you hear? Are you ever empty?

Discuss

Do you go to the park on your own, or with friends? Should children be allowed to go places without their parents? What is an appropriate age to go out without supervision? Are adults too worried?

Reimagine

Draw a picture of the view from the bench.
