News Gove is using Lord Harris to score political points

Michael Gove's partisan characterisation of Labour local education authorities in his piece (My hero: Lord Harris, the Conservative millionaire who is saving schools, 29 June) is baloney. Ten years ago, I was the leader of Merton council when we had two schools in Mitcham that were underperforming. Because of the changes introduced by the Thatcher government, the council lacked both the financial resources and the legal powers to turn the schools around. We knew they needed a fresh start and turned to the academy programme to achieve it.Far from being afraid to challenge underperformance and champion children, we initiated the changes. As a Labour council we sought out Lord Harris because he is an outstanding individual with probably the best record nationally as a CTC and academy sponsor. Continue reading...
