Questions about the twinklbar
Q
Why do I need the twinklbar to access some of your resources?
A
When we started the twinkl community in February 2010, we had two main aims;
- to ensure that the site is run by teachers, for teachers and to build this community
- to try to ensure that resources remain free
Over the past months, we’ve been bowled over by your support and encouragement. As such, we’re determined to stick to our aims as far as possible and believe that the twinklbar is helpful addition for everyone in the community. You can also support our work through the Premium service.
The twinklbar is entirely free for you, it allows you to stay in contact with us and access all our resources (including extra resources). In return, it allows us to provide you with the selection of resources that we do and also to keep them free. We absolutely believe that the new twinklbar is a win-win and is a really great way for you to support the work we do.
Q
How can I access your select resources?
A
In order to access our select resources, you'll need to download our free twinklbar. Once you have installed it, it will appear at the top of your web browser. Please note that you may need to re-start your web browser the first time you install the twinklbar.
Now, you can access the select resources through the twinklbar, just click on the select button.
You can also access all our select resources directly through the website. The resources will appear as normal, but you will be able to download them as one of our lovely twinklbar users - nice and easy!
Q
Who provides the twinklbar?
A
The twinklbar is provided by our friends at Conduit - they provide similar applications for many of the major football teams in the UK as well as a wide variety of top high street brand names. In fact, when you download the twinklbar, you become part of a community of approximately 300 million people worldwide! As such, you can be guaranteed that the software is absolutely safe and reliable.
Q
HELP! - I can't access your select resources even when I have the twinklbar?
A
Our twinklbar is tested for use with all web browsers, if you have difficulties, we suggest you try the following (in order):
- Re-start your web browser (closing it down by clicking on the red cross in the top right corner and opening it back up again) when you have installed the twinklbar for the first time.
- If you still have difficulties, we recommend that you clear your internet cache - there is a fantastic guide here to help you.
- If the above do not assist and you use Internet Explorer as your web browser, we suggest that you download and install Mozilla Firefox - a far more secure web browser. You will have to install the twinklbar again.
If all of the above doesn't work, we are committed to helping you through the problem. Simply contact us through our enquiry form and remember to leave your email address so we can contact you!

Having a technical problem?
We know it can be frustrating when something isn't working quite right – but the twinkl team are here to help! If you've ever got a technical question, we'd love to chat with you about it – as your question could help others out.
Recommendations for ALL users
If you ever encounter a difficulty on the site, we strongly recommend you first check the following:
- You have the latest version of Adobe Reader installed. Download the latest version of Adobe Reader. If Adobe Reader makes your computer a little slow, then why not try Foxit reader?
- Ensure your web browser is the latest version. The twinkl site is optimised for use with the latest version of your web browser and you are unlikely to get the full twinkl'y site unless you are up to date!
- If you are using Internet Explorer – use Windows Update
- If you are using Mozilla Firefox – use this guide
- If you are using Google Chrome – use this guide
- If you are using Apple Safari – use this guide
- If you are using any other browser – email us and we'll find you a guide. We recommend however, that you use one of the above browsers.
Opening resources
Q
What is a ZIP file and how do I open it?
A
Some of our downloads are ZIP files – these files are used when the resources are large, or there are a number of resources grouped together in a pack. In order to access a ZIP file, an unzipping program is required. Such a program then extracts the set of resources from the ZIP file and puts them onto your computer for normal use.
It is likely that your computer has software already built in that will allow you to unzip files. If you have this software, you probably won't be reading this – as there isn't a problem! If you don't have this software, we recommend using WinRar. The latest version of WinRAR can be downloaded for free (most users can choose the first option in the list).
Extracting the files using WinRAR
If you are using WinRAR, you can easily extract the individual resources from the ZIP that you downloaded by following these simple steps:
- Locate the ZIP file on your computer.
- Right-click on it.
- From the menu that appears, select 'Extract Here'
- You will then notice that the files are extracted and placed in the some folder as your ZIP file.. They are now ready for opening and printing in the normal way.
Q
I cannot open a file, I get an error message or the file looks very strange when I've opened it!
A
We recommend that you try the following (in order):
- Re-download the file
Please ensure that you download the file by right-clicking and selecting 'Save Target As' or 'Save Link As' to save the resource to your computer. This may solve this issue. - ZIP files
Some of our downloads are ZIP files – these files are used when the resources are large, or where there are a number of resources grouped together in a pack. More information on accessing ZIP files. - PDF documents
Most of our files are PDF documents. Please check our recommendations for all users – as this contains details about ensuring that you have the correct version of Adobe Reader, which is required to view the many of our resources. - Word Documents
All our editable resources require Microsoft Word, or a similar word processor. If you do not have Microsoft Word, then you can download OpenOffice for free.
Printer help
Q
How do I resize resources in Adobe Reader?
A
It is possible to reduce the print size of our resources using Adobe Reader's 'page scaling' function. You can do this as follows:
- Open the file you wish to resize in Adobe Reader and then click the File menu (top left).
- Select 'Print...'.
- Click the drop-down box next to 'Print Scaling' and select Multiple Pages per sheet.
- You can then select various options that will reduce the size of the print outs and allow you to print several pages on one sheet of paper. (For A5 you'll need to set it to print 1 by 2).
Q
Print scaling is not working, as per the instructions above.
A
We've found that this problem can be easily fixed by ensuring you have the latest version of Adobe Reader (please see above).
Q
I'm using one of your editable resources - how do I resize the image?
A
Many of our resources are editable, which means that you can change the size of an image or enter text before printing. You will need to use either Microsoft Word, Open Office or Microsoft Publisher.
The following are the instructions that are applicable to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher and Open Office.
- Open the document in your word processor.
- Click on the image you want to change and use the 'handles' at the side of the image to resize the image to the size you want.
- You can then change or add more images to the page as required, before printing in the normal way.
- Make a cup of tea and relax!
Q
How do I add text onto your range of name / drawer / peg / resource or editable labels?
A
We have a range of editable labels and products, and we always include text boxes on these products for you. However, we thought these pointers would be helpful for the time when you lose the text box or you use our images in another document.
The following are the instructions that are applicable to Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher and Open Office.
Using Microsoft Word
(This may differ slightly depending on which version you are using).
- Open the document in your word processor.
- Click on the image you want to change and use the 'handles' at the side of the image to resize the image to the size you want.
- You can then change or add more images to the page as required, before printing in the normal way.
- Now, click the 'Insert' menu and select 'Text box'. Drag the new text box above the label image.
- Next, right-click on the greyed edge of the text box and select 'Format text box...'.
- Using the drop-down options in the menu that follows, change the fill colour to 'No Fill' and the line to 'No Line' and click 'OK'.
- The text box will now be transparent and you can enter your text.
- Make a cup of tea and relax!
Q
The edge of a twinkl banner is cut off by the printer!
A
Thanks to Paul for this one! The first thing to try is when printing, change the printer options and ensure that you check the 'shrink to printable area' box.
If this does not work, then it may be that your printer is not able to print to the edges of the paper properly. In this case, you'll need to try printing on a printer that can.
