  • Really like this resource and anything that helps engage parents with reading homework is fantastic. Unfortunately I am unsure how the characters relate to the strategies, Is there anywhere I can find this out?

    • Hi Ellie,
The animals are intended to represent the skill highlighted.
The owl (Sharp Eye) looks carefully at the words.
The mouse (Mouse the Mouth) mouths out the sounds.
The parrot (Sound Talk It) uses knowledge of phonemes and sounds out the words.
The monkey (Chunky Monkey) splits words into chunks - e.g. Sun - day
The elephant (Don't Forget) remembers his sight vocabulary.
The kangaroo (Hop, Skip and Jump) skips the tricky word and reads to the end of the sentence, then comes back to look again.
The fly (Try on the Fly) has a good try!

      Hope that helps!
