  • My son (9) thoroughly enjoyed this activity although we did find it hard to believe an elf with such a charming name (no spoilers) could be a thief!

  • Lovely idea but really needed the corrections to be on the site rather than emailed to others who posted.

  • I've been using this one to one with the children I tutor. I downloaded a version on the 8th and had been using that all week - yes, clue 2 was difficult, they had to actually read the clue "each letter has been replaced with a new letter". Once they'd interpreted that correctly instead of guessing that A=M, they were absolutely fine. However, I was on a different computer today and had to download again. It wasn't until I was with my student that I realised it had been changed. There is a mistake in it now - GQQZ should be GSSB. I think I preferred the old version! It taught an interesting lesson. Great resource though - all of them enjoyed it, including my group of Functional English adult students.

  • End of term Christmas Activities.

  • My Year 5 class worked so well in teams and had a great maths session. I provided silly Christmas hats for the teams to put on once they had solved the clues, and had a plush elf holding a mince pie under the visualiser to hook them in. Chocolate coins for prizes too. Loved it! Thanks Twinkl

  • Clue 2 on this puzzle is completely unsolvable. for example it tells us that a=M meaning the last clue AZ would be M_ however in the answers it is the word on. very confusing for my year 5's. yet other reviewees have said it was solvable????

    • Could you tell me what the answer is to clue 2? I cannot figure it out even though I am 22 and a Student of Accountancy at University. Not surprised my 9 year old sister does not have a clue when even I cannot understand how it works. Thank you.

    • Hi klaudia2394,
Thank you very much for commenting! It's great to hear from you :)
All you have to do is continue writing the alphabet down the page, continuing from 'P'. When you get to 'Z', start back at 'A' :)

    • Well it does not work according to what I see here.
the first 3 letters on it is FTQ and when I changed them according to what you have replied it turns out as RFC. Second one is QXR = CJD... etc.

    • Hi klaudia2394,
I'm very sorry about. It looks like the corrected version hasn't yet been added to the site. If you start the letters with 'O' instead of 'M' you should be able to find the answers.

    • Thank you for this, it works now :) She will be a happy bunny when I will tell her it finally works.

  • Hi there,
I think there is a mistake on clue number 2. It goes down the alphabet as Q,R,S,T,T instead of Q,R,S,T,U.
