  • This is great for my son. Could you make more with a 'spot the wrong sound' perhaps?Maybe the sound could be in the middle and some letter tracing aswell, with various pictures dotted around?

  • This is excellent and I love the real pictures, but there are a few I can't figure out: insect in the L section, the bison/bull looks like a highland cow and for y it's not a yak but a highland cow. They are not walnuts but pecans. I have no idea what the bird for x is, and is the flower for z a zinnia? Thanks,

    • Hello again :) Just to let you know, one of our lovely designers is amending this resource for you to make it a little clearer :) We'll be back in touch shortly :)

  • Love this resource and was about to print until I read the comment from the above user.... was the resource ever update at amend the 's' sounds - if so could I have a copy please? As always though - fantastic resources!!!

    , Aug 25th
    • Hi teacher934,
I've just checked the resource and the words for 's' are sand, seal, spaghetti, snake, strawberry and snow. Would you prefer some words with a pure 's' rather than a blend at the beginning? If you would, just let me know and I'll see what we can do for you! Thanks for commenting :)

      , Aug 25th
  • I Will be using this resource with my Reception class in the Autumn ter. The aim is for them to match the initial sound to the correct pictures. This will help and enable children to discriminate and recognise initial sounds in different words.
I would appreciate it if a similar activity could be devised with digraphs, trigraphs and split-digraphs.

    • Hi saryabegum,

Thanks for your comment, it's great to hear from you!

We have many wonderful resources on the Twinkl site and we do have matching cards for phase 5 digraphs, for example. I was wondering if you could provide a few more details about the resources you're looking for?
Which digraphs, trigraphs and split-digraphs would you like the photo matching activity for?
      I hope you have a lovely day! : )

  • I will use some of these pictures with a child with speech and language difficulties for some specific visual discrimination work. I use your fabulous Twinkl resources in a lot of my games, as by the very nature of my work you need to do the same activities in many different ways. I know its picky, but from a speech and language point of view some of your vocab and pictures are not very useful, for example you use s blends rather than s words, str (strawberry), sn (snow, snake) and sp (spaghetti). S blends are some of the later sounds to develop, and for children with a speech disorder they are often not in place when they start school, and therefore tend to reduce the sounds to no, nake, bider, carf, etc.so may not recognise these pictures as beginning with the target sound. I make lots of letter sound packs and a pure s is tricky to find pictures for, to add to seal and sand you could have; soap, soup, sit, sing, seat, saw, soldier, sack. As I said, I love your resources and use them all the time, but just felt I had to share this comment with you.

    • Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. We can amend our resources so that they suit your needs. Would you like us to amend the resources for you in any way at all? I look forward to your reply. Many thanks :)

    • Hi nikkistar,
Thank you for commenting. I have put this request through, if we're able to make it then we'll be in touch to let you know! :)

  • It's called A-Z but mine is only the sounds from s-l?

    , Mar 15th
    • Hi there,

      Thanks for your comment!

I've taken a look at this resource at it looks like it covers Phase 2 initial sounds. I apologise that the file name included A-Z and we'll be sure to update this right away.

Would you like me to put through a request for a version which includes all alphabet sounds?

      Have a lovely day! :)

  • Brilliant resource for teaching initial letter sound to my pre-school children. Lovely to see its in phonic order rather than alphabet - saves me lots of precious time!

This handy resource features cards with initial sounds on them and cards with photographs related to the sounds. Can your children match them all?
