  • Hi,
Does the assessment grid correctly match the marking scheme? The amount of marks that it says are available for each question on the assessment grid does not correlate to the marks available on the answer booklet or the marking scheme. Please could somebody have a look at this?

  • These assessments are great although I have a few minor critisisms...
Question 3 - why were the rabbits left alone? is worth 2 marks yet the most glaringly obvious reason is that the mother is going out the the baker's. Surely this should be worth 1 mark or it should be clearer that children need to come up with two reasons. Also, why is it necessary to mention the baker's at all. Her statement to the rabbits is 'I'm going out' yet children can't get a mark for this.

Question 11 - how does Peter's mother react to the state of her son? is quite poorly worded. In the text we are told that her first reaction is to wonder where his clothes are and we are told that he's lost clothing before. This would indicate that his mother's initial response is annoyance. Yet, children can't get a mark for spotting this.

Question 17 - what ideas are we given about cowgirls? is quite vague. The children mostly wrote answers like 'they were written about in the 19th century' and 'their roles attracted less attention'. There can be no marks awarded for these responses according to the mark scheme.

Question 22 - completing the table.
The third row 'The Life of a Cowboy' has causes children to lose marks. Most children wrote 'life was hard'. Why is this not accepted as an answer when it is clearly stated in the text? Just as the responses 'living in dry and wild conditions', 'selling cattle' and 'long tiring work'. These are all stated in the text yet are not accepted as answers.

Question 33 - What ideas are we given about the nature of a woodpecker in this poem? is quite wordy for Year 3 children. Something like 'How would you describe a woodpecker's character?' would be clearer as most children refered to how the animal makes noises.

Question 34 - How does a puma move in this poem? Many children wrote 'sly-footed'. Would this answer be acceptable?

Question 37 - Do you think the poet is happy being herself? is misleading. It implies that only a yes or no answer is needed and it is only worth 1 mark. Yet, in the answer booklet it states that to get 1 mark children need to elaborate on their yes or no response. The question should have 'How do you know?' Or 'Explain how you know' after it to make it clearer for children that they need a longer response.

I hope this is helpful! Also, there needs to be some indication for teachers as to what scores would be considered standard, exceeding or working towards.

    • Hi littleem1906,
Thank you so much for getting in touch! It's lovely to hear from you :) I will pass your comments onto our teacher team who will take a look at this resource and make sure it is suitable. Regarding scoring these, as the actual SATs will be graded based upon the scaled scores we provide these materials for gap analysis and to aid teacher judgement, and do not give a level descriptor. I hope this helps:)

    • Thank you. I also wanted to clarify two more things...

Question 5 - children are asked where the rabbits went after their mother left. Many have written 'to Mr McGregor's garden.' Is this technically incorrect?

Question 14 - what do the rabbits eat at the end of the story? A fair few children have written 'bread and blackberries' because they've picked up on the fact that milk is a drink and not food. Is this incorrect?

    • Hi there - thanks for getting back in touch :) I have passed over all your feedback and the teacher team will take a careful look at this resource and make sure it reflects the objectives accurately :) Thanks for taking the time to get in touch!

      , Mar 29th
    • Sorry, ignore my query about question 5. I've just re-read that bit of the text and 'went to Mr McGregor's garden' definitely isn't the answer.

  • The questions on Rather from paged 34 onwards are talking about a different poem and not relevant to the poem Rathers !!!!

    • Hi Kim Wood,
Thank you so much for letting us know about this one. I'll get this resource checked right away!

      , Mar 16th
    • Hello there,
Our lovely team have taken a look at this for you. The questions from 34 onward are referring to the second page of the poem 'Rathers'. I hope this clears up some confusion! :)

  • Could these be available in large font please?

    • Hi rahowe,
I'll see what we can do for you! Thanks for commenting :)

  • Hi, thanks for these, they are a life saver as far as I am concerned.  Anyway, just a quick thought - I've noticed that in the old posts on this forum it says that a whole test is available, one where the 3 tests are in one booklet like in the term 1 test, but I can't find it.  Is there any chance someone can point me in the right direction.  Thanks.

    , Jan 29th
  • Is there a quick and easy way of identifying the objective covered for each of the questions? Thank you

    , Apr 28th
    • Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. To find out the objectives that each question covers, please go to the 'Mark Scheme' and look in the notes next to each question. It will tell you under the 'content domain'. I hope that this helps and if it doesn't then please do get back in touch. Have a lovely day :)

  • Is there any chance you can make the 3 sections available as one whole paper, similar to what you did with the Term 1 test?

    • Hi MrsSutton12,
I'll see what we can do for you! Thanks for commenting :)

      , Mar 7th
    • Hi there MrsSutton12,
If you right click on a column letter above the name cells at the top of the spreadsheet and select 'Insert' you can insert another column for another name, and you can do this as many times as needed!. I hope this helps!

      , Mar 8th

  • Using these resources to support some SEN children in Year 6. Can't seem to find Year 3 Term 3 stuff though - only for other year groups. Is it available?

    , Mar 6th
    • Hi there,

      Thanks for your comment!

Our Year 3, Term 3 reading assessment materials aren't currently available but our resource team are busy getting them ready for the site and will be available for download soon. Please keep checking back!

      Have a lovely day! :)

  • I have used the term 1 paper with my year 3's. I allowed them an hour at first but as they have not been used to timed tests, none of them finished. Therefore I allowed them an extra 20 minutes. The results backed up my teacher assessments and was a way of ensuring I am on the right track. The children enjoyed reading the texts too.

    , Mar 4th
  • Thank you! Could you please clarify guidelines for timings for these assessments. Are you envisaging time limits of 60 mins for all 3 papers in total or for each one? Since you have set 3 papers, where there used to be 2, not sure whether this is all left to our discretion. Would appreciate your advice, thank you.

    , Feb 29th
    • Hi there, thanks for your comment! The Standards and Testing Agency state that a total time of 60 minutes will be allowed for completion of the KS2 Reading Assessment in Y6. This includes time for reading and responding to questions. As the Twinkl reading assessments have been based on the KS2 Reading Assessment sample papers, a similar time may be given, but this is up to you. Have a lovely day :)

      , Feb 29th
  • Most of the questions on the fiction paper are to meet an objective about retriving information from fiction. This isn't one of the national curriculum objectives though, only to retrieve facts from non-fiction. Can you explain why these questions are on there?

    , Feb 14th
    • Hi there,

Thanks for your comment, it's lovely to hear from you! :)

When producing these tests, our test developers used this document from the Standards and Testing Agency as guidance:

On page 7 of this document, retrieval of information from fiction texts is given within the content domain, which is why it has also been included within our tests.

We have also produced this document to support the delivery of our Reading Assessments, which may be useful to you:

I hope this helps! Have a lovely day! :)
